Welcome our 2018 Southwest Louisiana Master Naturalists graduates

Congratulations to our 2018 Southwest Louisiana Master Naturalists graduates! 
Our 2018 SLAMN class graduated on June 23, 2018 at Tuten Park. The nine new graduates completed their certification and received their certificate, name tags, and T-shirts. The new graduates are:  Brittany Manuel, Barbara DuPont, Clay Ardoin, Jackie Lanier, Gary Dula, Annale Manuel, Dick Myers, Gay Gomez, and Lori Marinovich.

Sam Houston Jones State Park Bird Banding
Louisiana Bird Observatory


Irvin Louque holds bird banding activities at Sam Houston Jones Park on Saturdays in collaboration with the Louisiana Bird Observatory.  Volunteers are welcome! Learn how to set-up mist nets, age birds, and collect important data for conservation efforts.  Contact Irvin for dates and times.

Sam Houston Jones State Park Bird Walk
Sam Houston Jones State Park Bird Walk is led by experienced birder and SWLA Master Naturalists David Booth.  
​The Beginner’s Bird Walk always occurs on the Fourth Saturday of the month at Sam Houston Jones State Park.
Participants meet at 8:00 AM at the deck overlooking the swamp across from the pavilion.

Acadiana Park Nature Station - The last Saturday of each month, the Nature Station provides a guided evening hike through the nature trails in search of night creatures. Bring a flashlight, insect repellent and consider wearing long pants and mud-tolerant footwear. Call the Nature Station at 337-291-8448 to make a reservation before 3 pm the day of the hike.  Second Saturday of the month • Palmetto Island State Park, Abbeville - Dutch Oven Cooking, 10 a.m. - noon. The park will host the Latanier Cookers, a chapter of the Louisiana Dutch Oven Society, for a cooking demonstration and sampling. Participants can learn about this increasingly-popular form of cooking, the actual Dutch oven pots and much more.

Allen Acres Bed and Breakfast is a 26 acre wooded paradise near Fort Polk and adjacent to the Kisatchie National Forest, near the picturesque Ouiska Chitto Creek. It is listed as a State Natural Area. The Allen Acres have gardens specifically designed to attract butterflies and hummingbirds. Dr. Charles Allen, is an accomplished authority on the native plants of Louisiana. He provides tours and lectures, for a fee, to some of the rarest ecosystems around Kisatchie National Forest and surrounding areas that include Louisiana prairies, spring-fed Bay Galls, and pitcher plant Bogs.
